Writing is a dangerous thing. Writing is a thing of the
past. Why do I write? Everything thing now is in text, Times New Roman or Arial.
Where is the handwritten
text? Technology is fast and is now stealing our pen to paper mentality. We type,
we text, we are all uniform in our response for one another. Computer made, no
longer hand. We like it neat and clear to read. Our handwritten text is getting
messier, more unreadable, but it is because we do not practice. Our typing is
faster. They our taking away cursive in school, it is a thing of the past. And many
in the future will look back on it like hieroglyphics. Will we ask, “What is
cursive?” or will there no longer be a word for it.
There was
a class back in the day, which would teach people the art of writing. Clean precise
storks of ink making language look beautiful and refined. Calligraphy it was called and I guess
still is. Maybe no longer in the class room but you can get taught online or
maybe YouTube. Cursive was considered beautiful. Our kids will now not be
taught this art.
Will at
some point our writing be unreadable? It probably already is. That is why they
have us type to make sure they can read it. But they will only get the words. They
may only it the meaning behind the word. But the person behind those words will
be just another text in Times New Roman, size 12 fonts. There is no character
to the text, no mess up, no erase mark or cross out words. This is what makes
us human our imperfection. Like spelling the wrong word or giving us the opportunity
to look up a word and find that meaning in the journey of doing so. Now we have
Microsoft Word.
Handwritten
words is our way to show our individual identity. They are all different, they
are all unique. Please don’t forget to write.
Great ideas, thoughts, responses here the past few weeks. Hopefully we will start to settle into the semester in the classroom and also have some more, better thoughtful conversations too! well done, keep going!
